about herbal medicine

Plants and people have co-evolved together for millennia, and have a deeply interconnected relationship. Herbal medicine is the practice of utilizing the medicinal actions of plants to guide the body into a state of health and vitality. It is the traditional medicine of every indigenous culture of the world, and is still the most commonly practiced healing modality in the world today. Herbal medicines can be administered in many forms, and are often taken internally in the form of herbal teas and tinctures, as well as topically in the form of medicated oils and salves.

At its roots herbal medicine is a holistic practice that looks at the whole person and treats them as a unique individual with a unique constitution and unique needs. These unique needs effect the overall health of not just the body, but also the mind and spirit as well. Unlike with conventional western medicine, in herbal medicine we work to uncover and heal the underlying causes of disease, rather than using medications to mask the symptoms of the disease. From the holistic viewpoint, the symptoms of disease are the bodies attempt to heal itself and masking these symptoms may inhibit the healing process.

During a herbal consultation the client meets with a trained herbal practitioner to discuss the clients health concerns. The client and the practitioner work together to create a holistic picture of the clients current health situation and goals for wellbeing. The purpose of the consultation is not to provide diagnosis and symptomatic relief, but to offer guidance to the client that will help them in restoring balnace and wellness on a holistic level. The practitioner can offer support in the form of a herbal protocol, as well as dietary and lifestyle suggestions.

Working with plant medicines can have profound and lasting effects, that can benifit on health and well being on all levels - body, mind, and spirit. It is important to note that healing a chronic imbalance can often take a minimum of several months to several years, and takes the skilled advice of the herbalist combined with the dedication and effort of the client. There is no magic bullet in herbalism that will instantly 'fix' an imbalance in the body. There is no pharmaceutical that will do this either, as most commonly they only provide the temporary relief of symptoms. It can take many months or years for symptoms of illness to manifest in the body and as such it can often take many months or years to truly remedy them.
