Forest Medicine Intensive | Old Man's Beard
Join us for a truly one-of-a-kind experience delving deeply into the medicine of our wild medicinal plant allies. During the day-long Forest Medicine intensives, each class is centred around one of our local medicinal forest plants and builds relationship through plant meditations, materia medica, ethical wild harvesting, and medicine making.
There are three separate Forest Medicine Intensives offered in our 2018 fall schedule: Devil's Club, Western Red Cedar, and Old Man's Beard. Each intensive can be signed up for individually or together as a series for a discount (see link at bottom of page).

Sunday November 4th 2018 from 10:00am-3:00pm
Location: Saanich Highlands
Once prolific throughout the Northern Pacific Northwest north from Alaska down south to California, Old Man's Beard (Usnea longissima) has become more rare is recent years. Considered an indicator species for air quality, Old Man's Beard is extremely sensitive to pollutants. Technically not a plant, but a lichen, Old Man's Beard is a symbiosis between a fungi and an algae. It lives up in the tree tops, and in our region it is most commonly found dangling gracefully from old growth Douglas Fir trees.
During this intensive we will explore the spiritual/emotional and physiological medicine of Old Man's Beard and how this ally can aid us in connecting to our breath, and the communication of the air element which flows through and connects all species on earth in 'conscious communion'. You will be given tools to enhance relationship building with the plants, through 'plant sits' and meditation, deepening your connection to nature, and opening awareness of your place within it and within your self.
We will spend time gathering Old Man's Beard from the wild, and you will learn how to do this sustainably in a way that is respectful to this sensitive species. We will be delving deeply into the materia medica of Old Man's Beard, processing the lichen and making medicine together in community. Old Man's Beard tincture, tea, and salve will be provided throughout the workshop.
At the end of the class you will go home with detailed handouts on course material, a basket of wild-harvested herb and a herbal preparation prepared in class. Most importantly, you will be steeped in connection to your new herbal ally in the forest.
Note this workshop takes place outdoors in . We will be sitting with the plants out in nature, and harvesting herbs, which will involve periods of traversing uneven terrain, standing, bending over or squatting, as well and sitting on the ground. We will not have access to a shelter for this workshop but if it is raining we may spend part of this workshop at Fireweed in the geodome as we will be near by.
Please come prepared so that you will be comfortable!
What to bring:
lunch and water (hot herbal tea will be provided)
sturdy footwear, weather appropriate clothing such as a sun hat
